The Drakos - Selinitsa underwater system in Mani Greece

The cavern of Selinitsa and the underwater river "Drakos" are situated SW of Taygetos mountain, between the villages Ag.Dimitrios and Trahila.

The first dive in Selinitsa, that we are aware about, was performed by Franzjorg Kreig, a German diver who explored the first 50 m. of the cave in 1980. He came back in 1982
The first explorations of wider range were performed by the British group CDG (Cave Diving Group). They accomplished 3 mission in Greece, in 1981, 1982 and 1985.
Up to now, 18 successful (and 2 unsuccessful) dives have been performed by our team, at the Drakos system and one at the pit of Selinitsa. On the total, over 50 men-dives have been performed.
The Dives:

1. Dive No 1: Drakos 29/01/2000, 4 people

Description:

Date: 29/01/2000
Location: Drakos spring
Team: N. Doxas, A. Baitsos, K. Koryllos, G.Tzavelas
Weather: fine
No Dive boat, swam from Selinitsa (25 min swim)
Dive Time = 50 minutes in the cave

This was the first of a series of dives to be performed in the majestic area of the underwater river of Drakos (dragon). The entrance is situated approx 450m east along the shore from Selinitsa (directions given by Kostas Zoupis of SPELEO)
The outflow was tremendous and the temperature about 15 degrees, a combination which made up for a pretty comical "rock-climbing" penetration technique.
Having no information on the cave at the time (the CDG report sent to us by M. Piskula was received a few months later) we employed a breadth-first search approach in order to locate the entrance to the underwater cave system, situated to the eastern end of the vast cavern. This turned out to be a very exciting day as the entrance was rediscovered and the first fifty meters explored. At the beginning we entered throughout the western entrance which closes in after only 30m. After realizing our mistake we traversed to the eastern entrance and continued for about 80 meters where the cave narrows. On the way back AB and GT explored a passage going deeper (-17m) but again closing down only after 20m.
Visibility was generally bad and the fresh/salt water mixing made impressive visual effects.

2. Dive No2: Drakos 12/02/2000, 5 people
Description:
Date: 12/02/2000
Location: Drakos spring
Team: P. Gikas, N. Doxas, A. Baitsos, K. Koryllos, G.Tzavelas
Weather: fine
Dive Boat: Mr. Kelepouris
Dive Time = 50 min

Two weeks after the first dive the team returned with plans to start laying out a permanent line. The flow was even stronger than last time and the effort required for a diver to penetrate was similar to a rock-climber on a VI-class route! Alex was the only team member with a dry suit and also happened to be the front man with the reel. At the first restriction (approx 40m into the passage) where the flow increased, Alex demonstrated amazing dexterity in trying to climb using the right hand, lay the reel using the left and wiping his sweat with his left foot! George relieved him of his duties at that stage and took the reel for the next 25 meters. Kots and Nick were engaged into a tight-fit contest by exploring impassable routes. Those efforts proved fruitless. Phil was certainly the most agile underwater and the current seemed to have the least effect on him. He went on to take the reel further than we had gone.

Due to the problems encountered by the extremely high flow, the team decided to postpone all explorations for after the summer.
